PROJECT : Holiday Inn Express Semarang, the first in Indonesia

November 2013

The Intercontinental Hotel Group introduces its first Holiday Inn Express brand in Indonesia with the completion of HIEX Semarang, inaugurated last month by Governor Ganjar Pranowo of Central Java. PTI Architects’ Pris Marzuki, Technical Director and Yofianto Soetono, Interior Design Director and their teams delivered a complete service for architecture and interior design which will serve as the benchmark for succeeding HIEX hotels in Indonesia.

The 197-keys, 3-star limited service hotel with 12 levels easily becomes one of the tallest buildings in Semarang. It has a simple rectilinear façade comprising of 2 dominant parts- one of a slightly angled glass wall and the other of painted concrete wall with punched windows. Together, they lean against a backdrop of a taller and wider concrete box – providing stability and balance in the architecture.

The interiors echo the same rectilinear elements of the exterior into the backdrop wall of the reception counters, the ceiling lamps, the linear texture of the stone cladding, the floor pattern and so on. The blue green color of the IHG brand is used sparingly as accent to a predominantly beige color palette. Overall, the interiors exude a fresh, airy and light feel, a welcoming atmosphere for the guests.
